European Youth Parliament Win for College Students
12 May 2023
A team of students from Birkenhead Sixth Form College has won the regional heats of the European Youth Parliament competition.
The contest is an international affair, and winning the regional competition now sees the team of eight students heading for the national final.
Joel Bennett, Charlotte Buckley, Oliver Chesters, Izzy Hall, Eli Hardy, Olivia Poole, Harry Poole and Thomas Sheridan represented the College and came away as winners, competing against grammar schools and other sixth forms across the region.
The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is one of Europe’s largest youth platforms for civic education, intercultural encounters and the exchange of ideas amongst young people, and their mission is to inspire and empower a young generation of informed, open-minded, responsible and active citizens that shape society and drive impact.
The competition sees young people bringing debate to the table and the winners are chosen on the merit and delivery of their opinions, which have to be researched thoroughly and backed up with evidence.
Operating across 40 different European countries since 1987, the EYP is considered amongst the most prestigious contests for debate and political knowledge and understanding, and the team did the College proud by winning – for the second year in a row.
Head of Politics at the College, Jane Cavanagh said: “I’m incredibly very proud of our team. They worked so well as a team, communicating brilliantly between each other and ensuring that each member contributed. This is also what the judges singled out as a particular strength. EYP is a brilliant event that enables young people to build their confidence in public speaking and debating and to develop their team building skills.”
